WHAT ARE SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES?

Special education services mandate specially designed instruction based on individual needs. These services are available to school-aged students who have been identified by a multi-disciplinary team evaluation. These services are mandated by federal and state law and are described as follows:
- Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorder
- Blindness/visual impairment
- Deafness/hearing impairment
- Mental retardation
- Multi-handicapped
- Neurological impairment
- Physical disability
- Social emotional disturbance
- Specific learning disability
- Speech and language impairment

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS ELIGIBLE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES?

If your child meets state guidelines in one of the stated exceptionalities and needs specially designed instruction, he/she may be eligible for special education services. If you have concerns about your child, school personnel will meet with you to discuss your concerns and assist in clarification of the special education referral process and help determine if an evaluation is needed.
