12th Grade - Modern Literature

Course Overview:
With an emphasis on critical reading and evaluation of literary texts, Modern
Literature class will focus on eras occurring within the middle and latter
half of the twentieth century. Encompassing both, the modern and the
post-modern period, students will critically study contemporary, American
literary works and the significance of cultural changes as reflected in the
literature.Students within Modern Literature classes will be required to consider varying themes related to the literature's discussion of social, cultural, and political thought by demonstrating comprehension, application, and analysis through competent verbal expression and writing skills. Students will write in a variety of forms, including but not limited to reflective, expository, and comparison essays, response to literature, and news reporting and writing.
Modern Literature classes will also address oral language skills. Students will improve their ability to express themselves in small and large group settings, and practice and apply active listening skills.
