9th Grade History
Mr. Tom RichardsThrough a sequential course of study, freshmen at Prep Charter High School will acquire knowledge of World History from the Renaissance to the present day. Oral language skills will be addressed throughout the class. In doing so, students will improve their abilities to express themselves in small and large group settings as well as practice and apply active listening skills. Additionally, students will learn to increase, improve, and refine their communication skills through a variety of writing assignments. Reading comprehension will also be emphasized throughout the course.
Course content and objectives:
Renaissance/Reformation:
Students will explain the causes and effects
of the Renaissance and Reformation. Additionally, specific artists and
achievements of the time period will be examined.Explorers:
Identification of the specific factors that led to
exploration will be studied, as well as major explorers of the time
period.Scientific Revolution/Enlightenment:
Important scientists and
philosophers and their impact will be examined. Additionally, the
effects of this time period will be highlighted.French Revolution/Napoleon:
Students will explain the causes and
effects of the Revolution. Also, the impact of Napoleon and his empire
will be discussed.Industrialization and Imperialism:
The description of industrial
growth and imperialism and its effect on world history will be
summarized.World War I:
The significance of World War I will be examined.
Students will also analyze how conflict and cooperation among different
countries have impacted world history.Depression:
Students will summarize the causes of the Global
Depression and its effect on World War II.World War II/Holocaust:
The unit of study will focus on the
significance of individuals and groups who made political and cultural
contributions to World War II. Additionally, specific battles and
events will be summarized.Cold War:
Students will define the Cold War and analyze events such as
the Korean War and Vietnam War.Current Global Issues:
Through exploration of the continents, students
will analyze current global issues.
